ABOUT ME

After qualifying in September 2014 with the British Wheel of Yoga, I have taught in and around Whitby, North Yorkshire. I have undertaken additional training in Women's Yoga Therapy, Yoga Nidra and latterly Somatic Movement.

As a yoga teacher I firmly believe that EVERYBODY benefits from yoga whether it be physically, psychologically and / or emotionally.

I relocated in Septemeber 2020 to a small hamlet in Deux Sevres, France with my Husband Robbie and our 2 springer spaniels, Delilah and her great nephew Doug. As life happens we lost Delilah at the grand old age of 13 in February 2022, as we didn't want Doug to be an 'only child' we added the terrible twins - Dexter and Dylan to our family unit. We purchased a renovation project, so Zoom participants will see our renovation journey. As with all things our ideas and intentions of how we use our property seem to change by the hour

Follow our journey and get to know the area by viewing our photos and snippets of our experiences in our gallery under 'More - Taster Videos & Gallery'

Somatic Movement

What is Somatic Movement?

A movement technique developed by Thomas Hanna, combining his knowledge of philosophy, movement education and neuro-physiology. Using a form of movement known as Pandiculation.

Somatics is a movement technique whereby you work to re-educate the body on how to move. Reconnecting the brain and the body, allowing the brain to reconnect with those muscles that have forgotten how to work, an issue that you are probably completely unaware of and as such causes restricted movement, mobility flexibility and pain plus many other issues. Somatic movement works by sensing in to the body being aware and experiencing how the body moves or not, the experience of conscious embodiment. Somatic Movement Education can assist with all of this and more. Over time (from childhood) and through all manner of incidents our muscles can forget how to function correctly and efficiently.

Although I integrate somatic movement in to my yoga sequences I offer Somatic Movement for therapeutic purposes on a 1:1 basis only so that you get a prescriptive sequence for your needs.

Are you ready?

  • To remind those muscles that have stopped working how to work again - it’s a thing, and that thing is called Sensory Motor Amnesia (SMA).

I can help you do that

  • To eliminate muscle pain, leading to a better quality of life, more movement, less headaches, migraine relief, better quality sleep, improved posture

I can help you do that

  • To improve your rehabilitation from accidents, injuries, surgeries, irrespective of age.

I can help you do that

  • To improve your sporting or athletic ability, to improve your performance, to better your times, further your goals, achieve your maximum

I can help you do that

  • To feel younger, more energised, able to do more

I can help you do that

    TOTAL YOGA NIDRA

    What is Total Yoga Nidra?

Total Yoga Nidra is a profound practice and is completely passive.

    A brief explanation:

It is a form of deep rest and relaxation and allows the physical body to completely rest and release whilst the mind is kept active at a point between the conscious and unconscious mind.

Translated as Yogic Sleep, Total Yoga Nidra is a teacher lead / guided meditation session. This can be done in a group environment or on 1:1 basis.

Total Yoga Nidra can be used for sheer relaxation and rest but can also be utilised in a therapeutic environment and for many different reasons, e.g. pain management, stress, anxiety, PTSD, and a whole host of others, it is limited only by requirement.

I teach Total Yoga Nidra and my training was with Uma Dinsmore Tuli of Yoga Nidra Network

    TESTIMONIALS

Hi Jo, I wanted to tell you how much I have valued my weekly yoga sessions with you over Zoom. I have been doing yoga with you for nearly 6 years now and you have helped me through some very difficult times in my life.

Doing yoga once a week has enabled me to maintain my flexibility and strength, particularly during lockdown. It has enabled me to focus on my personal needs particularly with regard to my mental health.

I love the fact that you explain the postures so well and ensure that we do not push ourselves too far, you gently remove the element of personal competition, which can be damaging, particularly as one ages.

I am also delighted that I still get to see you every week. Your company and gentle and positive demeanour is a joy.

I have known Jo since 2018. I made contact with her at a time in my life when I was undergoing a period of much personal and professional change and uncertainty. I had never had any experience with yoga up to this point; however, Jo put me at ease and she quickly understood my needs and what I was looking for in 1 to 1 yoga sessions. Jo is thoughtful, reliable and always willing to ‘go the extra mile’. She has been extremely helpful in arranging our sessions to suit my circumstances. I feel that our 1 to 1s are truly tailored to ‘where I am’ , as well as giving me space and time to reflect on what is happening for me. Jo has given me such a great ‘toolkit’ through the practice that I have developed with her and I am able to draw on this in my day to day life. I have seen real results through the sessions with Jo. I feel more aware of my body and what it is trying to communicate to me, as well as seeing progress in how my body now moves. The somatics work that Jo offers is a real break through. I throughly recommend Jo as a practitioner and feel grateful for all her support.

    Dear Jo

Putting my thoughts into words is not my fortè.

However I have learnt from  you that the intent is the important part not necessarily the outcome.

We all have different strengths and weaknesses, you taught me to learn acceptence  and kindness towards myself.

My general fitness levels have deterriorated  due to leukaemia and getting older.

However your classes have enabled me to take part in your yoga session comfortably at home. I look forward to them enormously.

I am learning to relax during meditation rather than feeling I am wasting my time and must always be busy.

It feels wonderful to be part of a group of like minded friends.

Sent with gratitude for your wonderfully enriching philosophy in living .

I have been taking part in yoga sessions for many years but Jo’s classes are very special and the form of yoga that she teaches suits me perfectly. Each month she offers a new theme with a variety of related exercises, as well as combining our own ideas based upon what we would like to specifically focus upon. As she says: “It is your practice.”

Jo even spent time with me individually outside of a class having devised an exercise that would help support me with a particular issue I have.

Jo understands how bodies work and she explains how exercises relate to specific parts of our bodies in a clear and down-to-earth way.

We are encouraged to listen to our bodies and to work at our own level so anyone can participate whatever level of experience they have. Many of the exercises we practise consist of small movements yet have quite a profound positive effect.

I find Jo’s approach spiritual yet grounded and always feel relaxed and good about myself after each session. Her meditation part of the lesson is a delight and I was so relaxed in one particular session that I fell asleep!

I would never have envisaged that yoga could work so well using Zoom but I feel very relaxed and comfortable taking part at home yet enjoy the camaraderie with the other participants. It has been invaluable to me during the pandemic, and as well as being fun and enjoyable, has supported my physical and mental health enormously.

Jo’s zoom yoga sessions are an oasis for the mind and body in a week when the pressures of life drag us along. Her yoga sessions are friendly, relaxed and well planned to suit all abilities.  The  pace is slow and easy to follow with  clear instructions, with the clients well-being always given precedence.  Jo also gives her clients the opportunity to request movements to be included in her programs that they feel would particularly help them.  I feel that Jo’s yoga sessions help to keep me supple and they give me breathing space in a busy life.
